Everett Edgcumbe portable AC & DC ammeter, London. A large moving-coil electrical measuring instrument designed to measure electric current in amperes. Housed in a protective wooden case with carrying strap, it was used by electrical engineers and technicians for testing generators, power circuits, and industrial equipment. Instruments like this were common in power stations, workshops, and electrical installation work. Early–mid 20th century, c.1920s–1950s.
